At Concongella Primary School we understand that literacy is central to the learning and development of children, as literacy skills are vital to supporting all learning. Our school uses a Structured Literacy approach to teach reading, writing and spelling which involves explicit and systematic teaching of the fundamental skills around literacy instruction. Our literacy program has been developed to align with evidence-based methods and current reading research including three hours of instruction each day.
At Concongella Primary School, Mathematics sits with literacy as part of our core curriculum. Students use concrete materials and other resources to represent mathematical processes. This develops a strong sense of number, measurement, shape, statistics and probability before moving to abstract concepts. Our mathematics program aligns with evidence-based teaching practices. We explicitly teach each individual maths skill in a planned sequence that builds over time with a dedicated one hour each day. We also link each new concept to previously mastered skills and to real-life examples to provide relevance.
Through inquiry learning, students come to understand and manage themselves as ‘learners’. Through a two year cycle of learning students learn about the Humanities; Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History, and Science. Inquiry provides a balanced and rigorous education that fosters the ongoing academic achievement of each child as an individual. Our students build the knowledge, skills, understandings and attitudes required to become active global citizens and engaged lifelong learners.
Mental health and wellbeing are at the centre of all that we do at Concongella Primary School. We see wellbeing as the same importance as academic learning. At Concongella Primary School we use a variety of approaches to teaching positive mental health and wellbeing such as Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) and School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). Our students have the opportunity to participate in a range of community based activities to support wellbeing such as the MATES mentoring program and Hands on Learning Program.
The Specialist program is an integral part of the whole school curriculum. We offer a comprehensive program that provides students with a multitude of opportunities to continually advance their physical, creative, social and cognitive abilities. There are wonderful opportunities for students to develop their skills and interests across a broad range of activities including:
● Physical Education
● Arts
